Bubbles & Sunlight: This Print is All About the Spring Thaw

I just got word today that the ice is finally going out on our lake up north. One more day of rain, and it should be gone--every cloud really does have a silver lining! (I'm excited because it means that soon I can get back into the woods and onto the rocky landscape that is the source of so many of my images.)

This print, Gathering, was inspired by exactly this moment--the annual farewell to the ice.

At this point, the ice is eroding into smaller and smaller plates and appears to turn a deep blue color because it's reflecting less light as it thins. Bubbles are trapped in pockets and catch the sunlight, and as the ice breaks up, clear water comes to the surface. All the living things will waken soon.
